Bill, I suppose great minds think alike, as I posted almost the exact thought earlier today on another thread.

Honestly, the ABT is about the American backgammon community at large. Tournaments are ultimately a Ponzi scheme in which the many put cash in the bottom, and the few take cash out the top. And it tends to be the same few frequently. I am fortunate that I've been one of them. But while it has been good for me, I don't believe it is necessarily good for the community. I personally would still attend ABT events if there were no entry fees. I'd play Masters, I'd play other side events. I'd enter side pools. I'd play Chouette. There's action to be had. I do believe registration fee only main events with side pools would ultimately draw more players. And that will ultimately benefit everyone. Sorry if a change like this will interfere with the careers of us backgammon pros. It can't always be about what's good for us.
Grass roots is where it has to happen. They've got backgammon boards in the schools in Denmark. Why not here in the USA? Candyland and Trouble (Backgammon Junior) have dice. Monopoly has dice and money. Dice are not against the law. Let's make tournaments affordable to local school teachers and get them excited.
