A fair spot for the undefeated player

Sam: As long as everyone understands what the format is before play starts, anything reasonable is fine.
Right. If you assign each spot in the ladder a dollar equity (assume equal play, anything else is near madness), reasonable seems to mean that your equity always increases by winning, and that the variance between draw positions is minimized. After that, its all a matter of taste.
It sounds like the late rounds of the LA format looked like this:
MAIN: 4 -> 2 -> 1
| |
2ndCh: 2 1 => 1
+ +
4 -> 3 -> 2 -> 1
As an example, here's what this looks like in terms of dollar equities if prize pool is $512 and winner takes all:
MAIN: 4 (96) -> 2 (160) -> 1(256)
| |
2ndCh: 2 1 => 1 (512)
+ +
4 (32) -> 3 (64) -> 2 (128) -> 1 (256)
In the above, the 2ndCh match to get into the finals is worth 128, but the main flight match to get into the finals is only worth 96. Eh.. my personal taste would be to see the main flight worth more here, or atleast that these be equal. (But its still reasonable).
Look what happens when payouts are added. I don't know the actual payout structure (the consolation prizes affect this too), so I'll make up these:
1st: $294, 2nd: $146, 3rd: $72
The equities are:
MAIN: 4 (91) -> 2 (146) -> 1(220)
| |
2ndCh: 2 1 => 1 (1st: 294)
+ + |
4 (36) -> 3 (73) -> 2 (146) -> 1 (220) 1 (2nd: 146)
|
1 (3rd: 72)
Wala... now both semi-finals are worth the same, and my tastes aren't offended :-)
