I have recommended National Events on line for a long time and wrote an article on this several years ago.

To ensure there is no cheating, the participants would be monitored. So you'd have a bunch of people in say, 10 major cities, all competing on their laptops somewhere, with a director watching to make sure there was no foul play.

We could have some truly amazing tournaments with great participation and every match would be recorded so we could reward for skill as well as results, and the finals could be webcast for all to see (with commentary to make it even more interesting, and even with a simultaneous split/screen showing what the bot thinks of each play as it happens--eXtreme gammon can do that very quickly and graphically).
