Thorny 32 to play

In particular, 20/17 20/18 gives better control on white's high jumping numbers 64 and 65, where white will want to and have to play all the way, and where it is most important to catch the runner immediately.
20/15 gives more hitting numbers on single 6's played to the 17 pt (presumably white will want to stay back on 61 and 62, 63 gives almost equal coverage) but in these cases blue will more often have repeated chances to hit white, so immediate coverage is less important. And here 20/17 20/18 should give great flexibility in placing the checkers optimally for next roll.
I would surely have played 20/15 OTB, but after the fact it is not strange that the open play does better.
