I think Art Benjamin ought to loose his best and brightest on the development of a new and improved formula. Surely we don't have to be stuck with a 20 year old version that is not user friendly enough to be used? It's time for a new version of the software! ELO 2.0, or some such thing.

The formula is fine as it is, and you don't know have to know how or why it works to be able to use it. I drive a car fine, but I don't have any clue how fuel injection works.
