In Response To: Attendance ... Perhaps it is the Money (Bill Riles)

Agree with everything you said, and consider your point of view very perceptive.Years ago I used to play in the Novi tournament while visiting family in the area, but I quit for one reason. I had no interest in starting play at 1:30 or 2:00 and facing the daunting prospect of perhaps having a match start at midnight. With all due respect to Stick, most people have day jobs and are used to getting started at 9:00 or 9:30. Why should backgammon be different?

For those who like to gamble or come to tournaments to win money (and how many go home with more money than they arrived with?), an earlier start and finish by, say, 6:00 or 8:00 would allow plenty of time for chouette play and getting to bed at a reasonable hour.

It would seem that most of the growth of tournament backgammon would have to come from local players, and more convenient hours of play (as well as lower entry fees) would attract more local players.
