Attendance ... Perhaps it is the Money

To add my 2 cents, I think that BG is much more similar to poker than it is to bridge. How many people play poker if no money is involved? Of course, some people play bridge for money, but it's the exception and not the rule. I hope no one will disagree that the skill factor in bridge, at least duplicate bridge, is considerably higher than BG. That's why most people don't bet large sums on bridge, because the results are more predictable-- a large tournament will virtually always be won by one of the strongest teams. Chess, of course, is a more extreme example. I think it's pretty clear that super-low entry fee (or no-fee) BG tournaments will not draw a big out of town crowd.
On the side-pool issue, collusion seems likely if the side pool greatly exceeds the main pool. I know that this has been ground for DQs. But, I'm not sure how serious of a problem it really is. At worst, it will mean that a player in a later bracket will have a higher percentage chance (i.e., 100%, compared to, e.g. 55%) of playing the stronger player from the earlier bracket. And the weaker player from that bracket will benefit by cashing out. Is that so terrible? (Of course, it might discourage Calcutta action on non-side poolers.)
