It's a start

This is sort of funny. GamesGrid gave me a starting adjustment, based on my FIBS rating.
But I thought the purpose of the GamesGrid rating adjustment was to facilitate the gambling that was then available at the site. If they encouraged people to apply for higher ratings, those folks might be less likely to sandbag. Not that there weren't sharks: I seem to recall that svobo and falafel both had ratings in the low 1800s, out of whack with their skill.
I don't see what's wrong with starting everyone off at 1500. That's what the USCF does. Sure, some of the advanced sandbaggers would quickly attain high ratings--but in doing so would (hopefully) disqualify themselves from playing in the advanced division. I really don't think those chaps are going to syphon Giants votes. In the end it is supposed to even out. Would your ELO rating be higher if you just played beginners at gridgammon? I don't think so, if the system is working properly.
I'm very much in favor of ELO ratings instead of won-loss records, since the former are much more *opaque*. I have no idea what my won-loss record is at GG--nor do I want to know, I think-- but I do know my rating.
