I had the same initial reaction as well. Lots of work to do. How can it be a pass with blue perhaps being barely a favorite to win the game. However, consider that when it does work out for blue, a large majority of those wins will be gammons. So lets say blue only wins 50% of the time, and of those, only 30% are gammons. Gammons are worth the same as wins to blue at this score (on a 2-cube), so If white's takepoint is down around 20%, adding 30% gammons white needs to win 50% to take. In that case it is a borderline decision. However, I think blue does better than these assumptions and the pass becomes clear.
