In Response To: It worked! Now what??? (Coolrey)

Hey guys, I go to work and then I forget that I have posted this stuff, sorry for leaving you all hanging!

I see that Gregg Cattanach has already posted a rollout, so that should explain things...

But I will go through what I thought for you. Jona FANNED, with both men, so that was quite a windfall for me here... Recalling I made the 3rd best play, that is. Anyway, Jona likes to project confidence, but when he is faced with a cube that it takes some guts to take, he will quietly fold his tent. He seems to fear getting dragged through the mud with people watching. I really wanted to double, because at this score I didn't want to lose my market... and I knew to have any chance Jona would have to hit right away from the roof after I covered at least one of these blots. I didn't think he would be too confident about that, despite his bluffing, and I thought even if he takes this, it is a game I don't mind playing out. If it goes bad, I am just down 10*-7/11 instead of 9-7/11.

So, anyway, I sent it over and he passed, sure enough.

I showed this position to Jake Jacobs, who was in town for the event... I was thinking I had "stolen" this point from Jona, and Jake appeared to be in agreement. He noted that after covering or splitting or hitting a fly shot or whatever I would have about an equal game. I thought there was no way I could have passed it so I obviously didn't know that I had already LOST MY MARKET.

I felt pretty smug after talking to Jake. When I put it into a rollout I got similar results to Cattanachs. It would have been a double whopper not to double and my evaluation said as much as .5xx tragedy for him if he took it.

Maybe Jona's instincts are better than mine, and there is a good reason he wins a lot of matches. The overwhelming lesson to be learned is the amount of care you need to take when considering doubles that are gammonish when your opponent is 4 away.

Neil seems to get it, after reading his post. Probably one of the reasons he is the ALL TIME #1 on ABT points. He never lets anyone win 4 point cheaply.

I sometimes am tempted by the buy one Whopper, get one free ads.

To David Rockwell: There is quite a bit of work to be done by blue, to be sure... But White must respond well immediately or die. Mostly she won't be able to, so, PASS. The extra blots are enough to ensure death for White under all but the most favorable circumstances. Take care not to play this wide open in your own games...

The fact that this is such a HUGE double and pass argues in favor of my two blot hitting play in the first place, I think!
