Alan - The best deal on euros is to use your ATM card at any European bank's ATM that is on the same network as your bank (Cirrus, Star, Interlink, etc.). You get a true exchange rate with no add-ons. Just be sure that your bank doesn't charge a fee for using international ATMs (my bank doesn't) and have enough cash in your bank account to cover your withdrawals. If you speak basic French, Spanish, and German, you won't have a problem following the instructions on the ATM. Most ATMs I've come across in airports give you the option of seeing the instructions in English, but ATMs in other locations might be only in the local language. Make sure that it's a "bank" ATM. There are foreign exchange dealers (e.g. Travelex) who have look-alike ATMs and they'll charge you commissions and fees, so avoid them. I just got back from two weeks in Europe and rarely had to use cash because everybody accepts credit cards. You get hit with a 2% to 3% exchange fee when you use credit cards, but on the other hand you're not carrying large amounts of cash and you're getting airline miles or cash-back benefits.
