Alexandria Bay... some info if you've never been there

Sorry to disappoint Sal, but I'm going.
For those who have never been to this event I'll say a few things.
It is very different from any other ABT event you've likely ever been to. The venue is located on the St. Lawrence River and the views are breathtaking. If the weather cooperates, it is possible to play outside and people do. It is quite relaxed and friendly. Really a great group of people.
The hotel has supposedly undergone some renovation, but I'm not sure if that extends to the rooms. The place was extremely dated - unquestionably the place to be 60 years ago and they hadn't changed a thing. So keep expectations for the accomodations low and you'll avoid disappointment. You're there for the view outside not the view inside. And Alex Bay is a nice little town.
They usually run just an Open division. The format in the past has been Main with Progressive Consolation only and no LC. 9 pts to start, increasing in later rounds. They have always paid 3 spots - 1st main with the finalist in the main flowing into the Conso finals to play off for 2nd and 3rd. But don't come here hoping for financial independence. The entry fees are low - $120. And everyone gets to be a seed in the Calcutta where players last year went from between $15 to $75.
There's all kinds of things to do in the area. As you might imagine, the area does not generally attract tourists for the Backgammon. So you might wish to plan some additional time in the area. Everything centers around the river. I understand there is actually some pretty good scuba diving there if anyone is into that.
The biggest impediment to drawing a crowd there is the difficulty getting there. If you can't easily drive, you need to fly into Syracuse NY (which is not exactly a major hub of any airline), rent a car and then drive about 100 miles (all highway) to Alexandria Bay. Canada is right over the bridge. But if you are interested in going there, I suggest finding out if you need a passport these days.
Looking forward to seeing the truly dedicated amongst you that make the trip. It is definitely a unique experience.
