Given, but...

I would submit that any consensus around ABT statistics, formats, etc., have to made with the idea of attracting more media coverage, and thus more money, to the game: the primary long-term goals.

So, ask yourself: would the media like a simple way to rank and report on players? How does poker, a relatively new media star, rank players? How does bridge and chess, very high participation games but relatively weak when it comes to money-added sponsorship, rank players? etc.

See where I'm going with this? Try to frame the discussion around the major, long term goals, and a lot of options will immediately become less desirable..
