The incubation period for influenza can range from 1 to 4 days. The onset of symptoms is usually abrupt. Patients with influenza often present with a high fever of 101°F to 102°F, nonproductive cough, sore throat, and muscle aches. Patients may also complain of fatigue, headache, or a runny nose. Uncomplicated influenza usually resolves after 3 to 7 days for the majority of patients. However, in some patients, influenza is associated with complications that result in significant morbidity and mortality.
Preexisting health condidions make those individuals more at risk. An immunization (containing H1N1 is currently available) (tho it takes some 4 weeks to be fully effective). If you are concerned and still wishing to travel to an area where the outbreak is present, you might get your physician to give you a prescription for Tamiflu --- prophylactic dose is 1 per day, one twice daily for treatment.
