Gnubg (in my judgement) seems to do okay in more straightforward backgame positions, but I think the general feeling amongst players is that Snowie is still the better of the two.
Snowie may or may not be better than GNU at back games, but in any case they're both terrible. When you do an RO you can hope that if a bot has a bias that it gets included in both candidates and so "cancels out", but you can also just get a bunch of noise, regardless of whether you are using GNU or Snowie.
Both bots handle "straightforward" backgame positions pretty well, or as well as any human, I imagine.
