Why is there a penalty for having more pips to get home? There's no wastage moving outside pips. Only inside pips. So if the positions were otherwise identical, and there were 10 extra pips outside the homeboard, I'd expect it to evaluate exactly as a 10 pip race.

However, if the race is even, and one player has 10 extra pips outside, then the outside deficit may be indicative of wastage on the inside. But 5 pips adjustment seems way too steep here. Seems the gap on the 4 point with the extra checker on the 3 is worth perhaps a pip and the contact is worth another couple % or so to white. So if it starts at 68%, the position is probably worth around 72%.
