Get a backer (sponsor) first.

If you go for an online backgammon server to fill this role, do not expect for the actual final live event to take place in the US because you are currently a non-market due to your current gambling laws. How keen would the US players be if this panned out to be the case? Apart from that I think you would have some talking to do to talk an online server into promoting what is essentially a non-money play event; they generally want to attract money players.

So I think you are on the right track with looking towards corporations and even government backing.

It's a wonderful concept. However, it needs the involvement and full (continued for the duration of the event) cooperation of many different parties. That in backgammon, I am ashamed to say, is a very tall order because I can envisage many spanners falling in the works.

But good luck with it. I'll be happy to be proved a pessimist.
