I think everybody acted in the right way. We should collectively be seeking to AVOID time-outs -- I think the directors were trying to avoid a timeout that they had "caused". True that what they did may have "unfairly" alerted Brett to his remaining time, but the injustice potentially caused by they mis-setting a clock is far worse, so they had to bite the bullet.

I certainly agree that in ordinary circumstances, NOBODY but the players involved should call any attention to the amount left on the clock.

Personally, I try to make sure my opponents are aware of the time if they get low. Right around the point at which they're down to one minute, I might casually remark, "You know you've got one minute left, right?" I probably don't do that if I know for sure that the person has plenty of clock experience.
