Awkward Clock Situation

In Response To: Awkward Clock Situation (Petter Bengtsson)

Jason is correct; there was no need to 'notify' the directors that they set the clock correctly. AFAIK, the tournament merely loaned out many of the clocks used. Obviously, they were set to 22 minutes for all the 11-point matches being set, Bill fixed it; no issue.

I don't think Brent got any undue 'advantage' by the stop in play to discuss the time control. Personally, I will tell my opponent that he has 1 minute left when he does, especially if I believe he was playing unaware of his time.

This story is a good example why extending the time controls any more would be a bad idea. It took 3.5 hours for a 13-point clocked match? That would create a delay in any tournament if it was mid-event.

Every time we hear ONE story from a tournament about someone in time-trouble, Richard tells us the time controls are too short. I am of the opinion that the measure of an appropriate time control is when a small percentage of players DO get in time trouble. In Brent's case, his need to shake up and down 23 times (I counted a few of them during his doubles match) is the kind of pointless delay that properly is removed by clock use. Three is plenty to 'thoroughly' shake dice. If he'd just shake and play, he probably wouldn't have had any trouble.

Now if we can just get all the TDs to institute clock preference, we'll be there.
