I think it is also something to do with getting your checkers past the opponents other made point. Isnt this the same after a 53? Basically trying to kill your opponents home point checkers?
An unwritten rule of thumb that I like to follow is if my opponent has made a homeboard point in front of my back checkers, then any set that puts me past those checkers is where I want to be. This applies to 22,33,44 - the 11 should be easier, as it achieves more in your own homeboard than it does elsewhere. 5s are typically blocked, or runners, dependant on where your back men are, and 6s are almost automatic.
I have no idea if the above is accurate - but its what I have been doing, and I dont get dinged by GNU for it on 2/2. That also means that its less than a 0.02 error (as thats where my ding point is).
