Correct. That's how it should be handled. As it was uniformly in the earlier era. If it is clear that a player is abusing routine numbers, an observing director can install time controls, either by a clock or monitoring directly.
But to have random matches with an unusual number of difficult decisions, or perhaps an inadvertent mechanical err, result in a defaulting near the end is the kind of incident that is poisonous for backgammon growth.
The statement that clocks "eliminate sources of conflict" is breathtakingly wrong, as readers of this forum should immediately recognize.
