And there are thousands of non-clocked matches that we never hear about that wind up just fine. That comparison is meaningless. We could also look at poker, where the presumed non-clock environment produces literally milions of difficult decisions a year with only the rarest invocation of "clock!"
The issue worth analyzing is the effect of a newer player getting diddled out of a difficult-decisions match via a rigid clock setting. Or getting functionally cheated by permutations we've seen described here. Such incidents would poison the backgammon well. At a time when growth of the game is retarded, as we watch poker continue a boom.
