And I fail to see why boring games or portions of games cannot be edited out in their entirety. And much as I am a proponent of clock play, I see no reason why this matters for TV. Dead time that is not filled by interesting commentary or banter by the players should be edited out. If a player on a clock sits for 5 minutes burning clock time while calculating his match equity, the viewing audience does not need to see that. If a player shakes his dice 30 times before rolling, edit all but the last 3. And while live commentary is essential, why can't some of the comentary be inserted after the fact? Who says it must go on TV 100% "live"? Insert some post-match interview comments done with the players on what they were thinking at various critical situations right into context. All this editing and the production issues takes work, but backgammon can be interesting and exciting for the masses if done right. The biggest challenge as I see it is education - the masses don't necessarily have any understanding of the basic rules or strategy or even the object of the game.
