It's an internet phenomenon.

The overwhelming majority of hands at this year's WSOP never had any chance of being televised. ESPN has coned down their coverage to mostly the ME, and the 50K HORSE.

Knowing that, the discretionary money at this year's WSOP sold out the $1,000 intro("Stimulus Special") at 6012 entrants, and then immediately saw 2,791 entrants in the first-in-order $1500 donkament.

These entrants, knowing there was no TV exposure, and knowing the structure was lottery like, sent the money in.

Backgammon will never approach that with a sterile, hypertechnical atmosphere. "Like Chess".
