In Response To: A case for clocks - fast rolling (Jim Allen)

Jim.."He reaches for the dice. I roll. He withdraws his hand and asks if I know the rule about fast rolling. He explains that he had not picked up his dice and since I had rolled that my roll would stand, but he now can change his move (which would have resulted in my hitting) to another move with full knowledge of my roll. That meant that he won. Enjoy!"

Neil replies...This is a thorny issue but it seems that your opp may have taken advantage of the situation. I'll ask a few things.

1) What did the director rule? If you didn't call the director over YOU made a HUGE mistake.

2) You were fast rolling in bearoffs and it was tolerated, as it often is and as many players often do. Or at least in bearoffs your shaking a bit early and the dice come out of your cup as soon as the opp has his in his hand.

3) This is NOT the same situation as a non contact bearoff since your opp could legitamately been thinking about the move and pulled his hand back at the last minute to change it.

4) The opp reached for his dice..did he touch them? Was his play clearly best and did he pull his hand back at the last minute when he saw you about to roll? Or was it a case of his play being unclear since he has to consider repeat blots?

I'd have to have been there, or at least heard a very detailed account of what your opp did to make a ruling. Based on what you've said, there's a decent chance that the opp may have lured you into a fast roll and if his hand got really close to the dice, I'd allow you a reroll. If he touched or slightly picked them up, I'd rule that his play is done and your roll stands. If his hand was just moving forward and you clearly rolled too soon, then it clearly is your fault and I rule that the fast roll penalty applies and that he can change his play to screw you.

Honestly, you should have been aware of the situation and protected yourself by waiting a second or two longer for his dice to be up when shooting at a winning shot and especially if the opp's play basically wasn't forced. This, IMHO, is not the same thing as slightly fast rolling in a mutual bearoff!!

My Armenian relatives and friends have played this game for thousands of years with one set of dice and this BS doesn't happen. When does your move end when I play "Armenian"? It ends when you take your hand off the last piece to be moved. When playing casually, we might say that we are looking at the position, or stop the opp from grabbing the dice if we quickly want to change our move.

Isn't playing with clocks and one set of dice MUCH better? Now it is very simple...the player hits the clock and his move is FINISHED..PERIOD (unless his opp calls illegal move prior to picking up the dice)
