A case for clocks - fast rolling

In Response To: A case for clocks - fast rolling (Jim Allen)

One time I played an opponent who, in a non-contact bearoff, made an obviously correct move, grabbed his dice, slid them towards himself, and lifted them ever so slightly.

I rolled when it seemed to me that his dice were up (I was positive they were). He then called the director, stating that I'd fast-rolled him. Director asked the only spectator, who was a friend of my opponent and said he hadn't picked up his dice. I pointed this out, but the director must have thought it was irrelevant because he ruled against me.

This was in the days before clocks and before the current penalty for fast-roll plays (offended player can make opponent's roll stand, and can move with foreknowledge of opponent's roll).

So, shrug, the ruling went against me and I didn't make the hugest stink (director was challenged in many ways), but I barred the friend from watching anyway. A neutral spectator took his place.

Same bearoff, I roll a good number and pick up my dice, opponent theatrically throws up his hands. His dice cup falls onto the board on his right, and the dice come tumbling out--a mediocre number.

My revenge was that I claimed this was a valid roll. He called the director, who asked the spectator, and the spectator backed up my description of what had happened. The roll stood, and I won the game and soon the match.

Hee hee hee.

Yet I would rather not have disputes like this. I like clocks.
