I'm quite certain the vast majority of American players of considerable backgammon stature and with substantial clock experience wholeheartedly disagree with you.

Mechanically, the game is indisputably cleaner -- one set of dice eliminates fast rolling and disputed rolls, the major sources of disagreements and/or confusion in matches.

I'm sure if we each spent unlimited time on each move the overall quality of play MAY improve slightly. But three day matches are difficult to incorporate within weekend backgammon tournament schedules -- and rather boring from my perspective.

In my observation, with very considerable clock experience in championship level matches, few matches ever reach a time critical nature -- unless UBK is involved, and that's another story. The few where time has become a factor are, more often than not, the result of physical infirmities or incessant dice shaking. Allowances for physical infirmities can be made. Incessant dice shaking should be eliminated.

With more experience with clocks, and with more experience playing, I would find it hard to believe that any championship level player should ever get into a time problem. Beginners and intermediates, without the level of match experience and understanding of the game, are a different story.

I understand in Japan, as an example, all matches at every level are clocked. Does anyone know if they use the same time controls with the lesser experienced players?
