Clocks lead to a cleaner game?--really

Arguing against clocks that placing a time limit on think time will lead to worse play is like arguing against a time limit on school exams. Sure, if you allow the students to sit there for 10 hours, they MIGHT score better, but there are schedules to keep and at some point you have to pick a time that is reasonable for the vast majority and say enough is enough.
The debate is not whether clocks should be used (they must), but how much time is reasonable to allow that will best balance the desire that anyone playing at a unrushed but reasonable pace should not run into time trouble, and the desire that SOME limit on time must be set so that tournaments don't incur unacceptable delays and opponents are not made to sit and stare at the paint drying while some undisciplined player can't decide how to play their opening 31, or must shake their dice 26 times or until it has the right sound in the cup.
