Don't worry David...
if backgammon players are willing to travel to Pittsburgh in February, or to Detroit at any time of year, they will be more than willing to trek to Fresno in May.
Why Fresno? I will deduce from what Chiva has stated previously in this thread that the main reason is the interest from the casino; additionally he got a great room rate and some people were moaning about relatively high room rates in Arlington compared to the typical ABT event.
Chiva deserves props for continuing with his efforts to continue this venture, and based on the attendance just in the two California ABT events alone, combined with positive reviews of the US Open both on this forum here and from every player I've talked to who was there, I predict at least a doubling of the field from last year and won't be surprised if it is tripled.
Any flak about Fresno as a location is just proof of the old adage that no good deed shall go unpunished. If he had held it in downtown San Francisco with $149 a night room rates, people would be griping about that.
I've put a few posts on this thread that have tried to be amusing, yet informative as well, and if any of mine have been interpreted as demeaning to Fresno or any of Chiva's efforts, that was surely not my intent.
I appreciate and support Chiva's efforts and will certainly encourage my local players to consider to attend this event.
