Monte Carlo Update

Itīs no secret that I have never been a fan of the World Championships the way they currently are.
Donīt get me wrong. I like the idea of having a tournament in a high priced and lavish place such as Monte Carlo.
But a "World Championship" must be the flagship of the game. It should be moved around the world, just like other sports and games. It should be affordable to attract a critical mass of people and discover new talents from new countries and it should help to promote the game in new territories.
The glory days of backgammon, played by the rich and famous are well over. That was 30 years ago when Monte-Carlo World Championships was set up. Things have dramatically changed since, but not the event in Monte-Carlo. Unfortunately. Numbers going down year for year prove it and itīs not only the bad economy to blame.
Imagine a true World Championships with a few thousand players from all around the world (and not only a handful of usual suspects who can afford to spend 10k for a week). Now this is a scenario which automatically will attract the media, no matter where it takes place. And along with the media come sponsors and money.
I leave it to you to figure the rest.....
