Monte Carlo Update

Stories of such cheating make my blood boil.

However - the question is what has changed to drive attendance down? Were there no or much fewer such cheaters 2 years ago or 5 years ago? Did past directors take action in the presence of "no evidence", and if so what? Did complaining players ask for a monitor and if so, what was the response? Did the director refuse a request to ban spectators talking languages other than English during match play? Or did nobody think to make such a demand? Cheating is clearly unacceptable, but what SHOULD the director have done without physical evidence or witnesses other than noting who the complaint was against for future reference? Keep in mind that imposing penalties for unsubstantiated cheating accusations lead to cheaters accusing their opponents of cheating with their friends backing up the false claim. A strong argument here for allowing videotaping of all matches.

There have never been clocks in Monte Carlo (that should change, and the cheating issues make the case stronger). Are players finally getting together and agreeing to make a stand? Have people making such a stand for clocks or "stronger enforcement" directly informed the tournament directors that this is why they are not attending? Or are they expecting the directors to guess that it is not simply the economy? Without providing feedback, why would anyone expect anything to improve?
