One good tool to meorize positions and entire sequences is to train yourself by playing blindfolded. I did it some time back and that gave me a photographic memory to "store" patterns in my little brain and become a fast player. Not that it made a great player of me but it sure worked out fine for X-22 who did the same some decades back.
