In these type of positions where you opponent has two or more higher points open and you have the option to take an extra checker off at the expense of 2 shots, your opponents wins after hitting are usually about the same with either play, which means that even though you get hit two more times and lose 1/4 of those or half a game, you pick up half a game on the 11 times you would have been hit anyway with the safer play by having the extra checker off. The value comes from your increased wins when you are missed and, at other scores, your gammons. You have to search long and hard and need a very restricted take on a redouble before you can find positions similar to this one where it would be wrong by more than a tiny, tiny amount to take an extra man off. Again the rule of thumb when your opponent has two or more higher points open is to take the extra man off.
