I leave the least shots. Petko and most others seem to bear extra checkers off... but I usually adhere to the old rule that it is worth one extra shot to bear off another checker.

Recently there have been some exceptions noted in the 5-8 checkers off range, I think. Dunno where I saw this?

Anyway, if you bear two men off you only have to be concerned with possible losses in 11 games... basically. Otherwise it is 13! There is continued jeopardy in both positions though admittedly less when you take 3 off... but I doubt it is enough to sway it as much as an extra 5.6% immediate hits.

When all else fails, make the safest play. When the safe play is wrong it is never wrong by very much.
