Excellent suggestions all, and I'll add some more:

* The swiss concept is really the way to go. I know that some people hate the swiss followed by playoffs, but in order to generate media interest, you need playoffs. Having a single, unambiguous match to decide the world championship is CRUCIAL.

* Key matches need to be broadcast over the internet. The technology required for this is absurdly simple. One person sits at the table with a laptop and uses instant messenger to broadcast the moves. Somebody else enters the moves into a display program online.
