non-progressive vs progressive consolation

Hi all, I would like to point out precisions about progressive consolation, which seems to be ignored in this thread (yet suggested in John O’Hagan’s comment): Progressive consolations were introduced (Does anyone know when btw?) merely in an attempt to solve the problem of a “smoothing“ the schedule of flights (and side events) in a BG tournament.
In any large field event (100+), it takes 2 days or more to reduce the field to 8 – especially when the chosen format is ‘un-clocked’ 17 point and growing. In MC, the quarters are played the evening of DAY FOUR!
If consolation wasn’t progressive, 10 to 20 % of the field would skip consolation and go straight to Last Chance; from my experience, this is just not accepted by players... (I must say, I can’t see why I would be deprived from my residual equity (of 35/30%) just because I play well, run deep and eventually lose in last 8 or 16!)
So I believe this basic rule should prevail in all tournaments: “ALL players but those who have cashed in the Main shall play the consolation”.
But if it takes 3 days to know who is in the money, players defeated in the first 2 rounds of the Main, (or 75% of the field), are free and bored at the end of day1. Are those happy to wait until day 3 (4 in MC) before they can play consolation? I don’t think so. From their status of ‘OUT’, they really don’t care to preserve equity for the players that beat them in the Main! They just want to play their consolation flight (and I don’t think they like to be forced into playing side events either, while still running for paid equity...)
So my bottom line here is: A BG tournament CAN be played with non-progressive consolation but only under (at least some of) the following basic conditions: 1) Field cannot be too big (60max) 2. Pace of play cannot be too slow (11 or 13 points clocked matches), so that field is reduced to 8 no later than mid-day 2; And 3) Last 8 players of Main should cash.
In MC, with a field of 150/250, the only practical solution to this, in my view, is speeding up the pace of play in the Main. Clock and match length are key.
