Another thought...

I played a match at a recent tournament where I had a choice of whether to split or not. I knew splitting was too risky, possibly a big error. However, I had a strong feeling that my opponent was a conservative player, and would not necessarily play best vs. the split, whereas if I didn't split, he might be less prone to error.

I split (blunder), he missed a cube (blunder), he jokered me to get to massively TG and cubed me out.

Was my split an error?
