5th percentile of Open players?

Neil replies that he thinks you have to subtract nearly a full point to make that statement correct.

Rich adds:

I agree, and I disagree. Depends how you measure this.

I will take some wild guesses at some numbers.

How many players in the world could reasonably be categorized as Open level players?

5000?

How many players in the world are likely to play with AVERAGE error rates below say 4.2?

75?

That's only 1.5% by my wild guess.

But how many Open level players actually attend live events every couple of years and enter the Open division?

2000?

How many of these attendees average 4.2 or better? 60?

Thats 3.5% of active tournament players.

But what percentage of tournament entrants does that represent? If you average an under 4 error rate, I bet you attend almost twice as many tournaments per year than the average Open level player. So effectively, it is like having almost twice as many people playing at this level.

So I think over all, it is a reasonable guess that 6% of Open tournament entries are from people playing < 4.2 ER on average.
