Matt: I think your estimate is probably pretty accurate, depending on the tournament. I believe that when you look at an event like Novi, there are probably closer to 8 to 10 percent that play under 5.0 average for the tournament, but for most other, smaller tournaments, where you have fewer WC players and Giants, it probably is a lot closer to 5 percent.

Of course, a different subject is what percentage COULD play under 5.0 if that was their goal, and that would be higher. I know that if I do not adjust my game depending on who I am playing and strictly play for the lowest ER I do score better, but that is not always my objective when I play in a tournament against inferior and superior players.

This variable, by the way, probably doesn't affect the ER rates as much for the very, very top players or the very, very low-open players, but probably more for someone like me who is (in my opinion) near the center of the Open field and often plays close to that 5.0 threshold.
