Hit, come out, play on, in most cases. (1-1) is the only real joker- (1-6) and (1-2), leave priming or hit-back returns with about 2/3 of the deck. If you get hit and don't respond you still have good chances, owning the cube. The real risk is staying back and losing your play-on market, or the game.
