Chouette tournaments ARE fun and have been tried before. In Venice and for the past 3 years, a poker-style tournament has also been tried in which everybody starts with the same stack and 1 game is played in each round (with cube). Next round is always against another player. The one losing his stack is out. The one collecting all the stacks is the winner. Fun too.
I have a little correction to "traditional backgammon challenges": those, even without the cube are played as matches, mostly to 5 points.
