There was a Masters Jackpot in Vegas where they only filled three brackets of 8. The payoffs were 12K, 24K, and 36K. Nack, Corbett, and I decided that whoever got the bye would pay the other two 3 grand apiece. Nack and I wound up playing the semis. Leading 18-14 Crawford I took a break. I wanted to hedge a grand to win five but it was dinner time or something, and there were no high rollers in the room. So, I offered it to Nack, telling him he was one of the only two players I could imagine booking such a bet. (Howard Ring was the other.) Nack would do 4-1, but at the time I was on top of my game and felt even 5-1 was giving up as much as I wanted.

Nack won the next two games to reach 17-18, then proposed hedging five even up. I agreed.

The cube was turned and we reached this position (not sure how you folks post diagrams, so you'll just have to picture it): Jake has a six-prime, deuce through 7pt, and three spares to bring in from my midpoint; Nack has a five-point board with an open 4pt, a spare on his 10pt, three checkers on the 24pt, and one flying. He fans repeatedly as I am forced into an awkward bear-in, all three spares on the low points. Then, he enters with 13, I clear my bar with 54 (more stacking), he runs with 65, I double-blot with 65, he double hits with 54, I fan, and he rolls 33 to close me out.

Funny, I still remember that. :-)
