Sure it's normal to get a bye in the first round if a bracket doesn't fill up.

However, if what's going on in Cannes was normal then I'd not be playing tournament backgammon. I'm pretty stunned that you say this sort of thing happens all the time.

Here's how Sander and Steen Grønbech have done to reach the final of the losers bracket:

Main and losers bracket:

Sander: bye-w-l-w-w-w-bye-w for 5 wins and 1 loss

Steen: W-l-bye-w-w-w-w-w-w for 7 wins and 1 loss

In other words, Sander could have beaten Steen, had a worse record in the tournament and still progressed further than Steen.

If this happens all the time where you play (in the US), then that's a big reason not to come to the US to play.
