Can I have a walkover in the finals? 8~)
The genie scenario isn't quite the same as what's happening here. For one thing, a player in the bye group faces a stronger opponent on average in the finals, since that opponent is the winner of a group of 64 rather than 32.
Picture the A format drawsheet. There are 32 players in the top half, all of whom have byes and consequently start in the second round. Let's call these players group X. The bottom half is a full group of 64 players. Call the first 32 of these group Y, and the last 32 group Z. After five rounds of play (rounds 2-6 for the X group), there are three players left, with X playing the winner of Y and Z.
Now imagine that the TD cuts up the drawsheet at the start of the tournament. All that's posted is three full 32 player draws, one for each of our groups. You play five rounds without knowing whether you got a bye, until the playoff structure is revealed at the end. Not having that knowledge doesn't affect your equity at all.
But you also can't tell whether the director really did the full draw in advance, only now revealing which group got the bye, or drew the playoff at the end. A and B are really the same format, except for information.
