I dunno - I think I'd take the first round bye. A later round bye only benefits you if you get that far. But a stronger player gets to compound their edge by playing more matches, so it wouldn't surprise me if the later round bye turns out better because the average edge is reduced in later rounds.

Since a bye is "free equity", I'd expect (but haven't worked out the math) the strongest player in the field benefits most by a format which minimizes the max equity doled out to any individual player, and a late round bye is packed with free equity. Isn't this type of minimization generally regarded as desirable for a bracket anyway?

I have a simulator which can figure the answer... not sure I feel like setting it up tho... maybe later :-)
