Yes, any player should prefer to get a bye in the later rounds under the hypothetical situation I gave. A bye in the later rounds is worth more than a bye in the first round to everyone, since the level of competition rates to tougher, and once you get to the later round the bye is worth the most to the worst player in the tournament and the least to the best player, but you have to win a series of matches to earn the bye and guess who rates to win a series matches more often? That is why the late bye should be preferred even more by the strong player, he will earn it more often.
