Pareto efficiency rules?!

I guess the answer to your question mostly depends on which goals you want to achieve.
When preparing for last years MC I concentrated on eliminating my main and biggest errors. I worked through the following books (for the third or fourth time in some cases):
- Understanding backgammon
- Backgammon Boot Camp
- Modern Backgammon
- Backgammon encyclopedia
and made small position cards of the main reference positions and all errors I made while working through the books. Then I played a set of 12-15 longer matches online against a good friend and 50+ matches against gnubg. I collected all .04 (and above) non-obvious errors and categorized them. When in doubt I made small rollouts, extending them in case the result was close or did totally change.
All in all I had more than 300 cards which I worked through again and again, not only memorizing the right decision in a given position but also trying to understand __why__ a certain decision was correct. I had only 2 months (spare time besides my job) but I was quite satisfied with the progresses.
I guess the Pareto 80-20 rule also applies in backgammon, so I would always concentrate on eliminating the worst errors (in quality and quantity) with the least effort. The way you do it depends on your favourite learning method. Some like to read (books), some like to listen and discuss, some like to play (props).
Ciao
