Its an excellent question, isnt it.

This comes down to your preference really. Would you prefer to get into a hitting battle from here, or would you prefer to be playing in mutual ace point holding games? For me the decision is made by my opponent, and the score I am at.

If I think I can significantly outplay my opponent, I will take a hitting contest, as this will lead to more outfield checker play decisions. If its close, then I will prime it up. If the score dictates that I really want a gammon, then its the hit. Varies so much.
