Someone else will have to comment on playing GNU; however, on Snowie I play it at 1-ply and then analyze at 3-ply -- so, hopefully, I'm getting the full teaching value of playing the bot. It is still playing in the 1.0 -- 1.5 range at 1-ply so it's not like playing some novice. But the cubes are not as efficient (perhaps the biggest variance in play between 1-ply and 3-ply, based on anecdotal observation only) and, thus, in my opinion, are more realistic.
