My statements are not contradictory - they are complimentary.

There is value playing the bot - play it at its best to challenge you and hopefully absorb best play in order to emulate it. And of course analyze your own play.

There is value to playing humans - don't try to simulate human play with a dumbed down bot, because you can't - just play people online on a site where you can record your matches and analyze with a bot.

I believe you maximize your learning by doing both.
